Description of Colloquium
and Activity Groups




Colloquium will consist of two major components this semester. Every other week (odd-numbered days) we will meet by year (first-year students in JMZ 0220, second-year students in JMZ 0226) for speakers, discussions, etc. On alternate weeks (even-numbered days) we will initially meet as a whole program (joint session with first and second-year students) in JMZ 0220. We may have one or two joint sessions where we have a special speaker, but most such weeks we will divide into our Activity Groups. The three choices of activity groups are:

"Service Learning" - coordinators: Elizabeth Brenden & KerryAnn O'Meara
"Investigation & Presentation" - coordinator: Steve Wright
"Advocacy Projects" - coordinator: Al Gardner


Schedule:

January 28 -

all students: introduction and explanation of activity groups

February 4 -

joint meeting, then meet by activity groups

February 11 -

2nd yr. students join 1st yr. students for special speaker:
Taffy Brandt, AIDS lecturer
"My Daughter Died of AIDS"

February 18 -

joint meeting, then meet by activity groups

February 25 -

2nd yr. students join 1st yr. students for speaker:
Dr. John Splaine, Dept. of Education, Policy, Planning & Administration, UMCP
"How TV Affects Children: The Cultural Mileu"

March 4 -

joint meeting, then meet by activity groups

March 11 -

Speaker for 1st yr. students:
Corporal Tony Avendorph, Prince George's County Police Dept.
"Teens in Gangs"

2nd yr. students meet in room 2206 (JMZ)

March 18 -

joint session

March 25 -

spring break

April 1 -

2nd yr. students join 1st yr. students for special speaker:
Mary Beth Blegen, National Teacher of the Year

April 8 -

joint meeting, then meet by activity groups
Investigation & Presentation projects due (presentations to activity group)

April 15 -
